IBM AS/400![]() Home

Does Microsoft really use AS/400s to run their core business functions? Well,
we know they did (AS/400s were in the background in some of their promotional
videos). We know they moved them out when the black models came in (just too
damned obvious). We know they outsourced the whole AS/400 operation and could
truthfully say "we don't own any AS/400s" (of course, when has Microsoft
worried about any statement being the truth?). We don't know if they are
still using them right now, but the chances are good. A sane megacorp just
doesn't risk its core business on Windows NT servers.
What is certain is AS/400s are used by a very wide range of businesses that really care if their systems are reliable. The series starts just above the mom-and-pop level and goes all the way up to multi-million dollar beasts just below mainframes. AS/400s are starting to be used has high reliability e-commerce web servers as well as in their traditional back office business roll. You can go to IBM's AS/400 site for a lot more information. |
