API - Application Programming Interface - Operating systems like DOS, Linux and Windows, and other system code, are not intended to be understood by applications programmers. What the application programmer gets is a list of functions, what the functions do, how they are to be called, what parameters to hand to them when they are called, and what parameteres they will return. This list defines the API. Microsoft is famous for publishing one set of APIs and having a secret set for use by their own programmers. They deny this, but it has been proven.
