Motorola, responding to requests from its telecommunications customers is
preparing a distribution of Linux capable of achieving "five nines", or 99.999%
uptime. That's 5 minutes a year downtime, the standard for telephone
switching equipment. The Motorola distribution will be called High
Availability Linux or HA Linux for short. It will run on Intel
and PowerPC platforms.
Motorola expects to start shipping the product in May of this year. More information can be found at Smart Reseller.
Meanwhile, Microsoft and it's partners are working on achieving four (4) nines with Windows 2000 Data Center, but don't know for sure when Data Center will ship and have no idea when it will achieve that reliability level. Four nines is nearly an hour a year downtime.
