It is widely believed the largest stumbling block in getting Windows 2000 (NT
5.0) out the door is its most important new feature, Microsoft Active Directory.
MAD is promoted as a truly enterprise grade directory service that will
solve the horrendous problems larger organizations are having administering NT
servers. Microsoft has already admitted MAD has severe shortcomings by trying
to pass them off as "features", but they can't get even that much to work.
At a recent conference, a Microsoft official was asked point blank if
Microsoft was negotiating with Novell to license NDS (Novell Directory
Services) which is already mature and far beyond what MAD could ever be. The
executive was evasive.
