Novell is no longer holding an annual event for its Platinum resellers, so
Microsoft decided to do it for them. All were invited to an all expenses paid
trip to Microsoft's Redmond headquarters, and a large number went. This event
was important to Microsoft as most of NT's success has been at the expense of
NetWare, and NetWare 5.0 threatens to end the trend.
So, what did they do and how did it go? Well, Microsoft did what they do
best: they lied. Unfortunately, they lied to an audience that knew better and
ended up with outraged resellers.
- Microsoft told the Novell resellers that one NT Server could replace as
many as five NetWare servers. Truth: those who have done the conversion
report it takes at least two and often three NT Servers to
achieve the same service level of one NetWare server.
- Microsoft claimed Active Directory was far superior to Novell Directory
Services. What a hoot! Active Directory still doesn't work, and the whole
industry knows it would have nowhere near the capability of NDS even if it
did work. Microsoft is already trying to peddle its shortcomings as
"features" and may be in negotiations with Novell for a license to NDS.
- Microsoft told the resellers Microsoft Exchange outsold Lotus Notes for the
last two quarters. A reseller stood up and waved the morning's Wall Street
Journal containing an article showing Notes outselling Exchange for the
third quarter.
So why would Microsoft blow the whole event by telling such obvious and
outrageous lies? Because they've lied so often and so outrageously, and been
allowed to get away with it, they can't conceive of any other way of doing
business. Its simply an automatic reflex.
