Microsoft proudly displayed at Comdex their new Clear Type technology which
provides a 300% improvement in clarity of text on the LCD screens of portable
computers. Commentators declared it "the most important technology at the
show" for its ability to bring computer displayed books closer to reality.
Bill Gates prominently included development of Clear Type in his Comdex keynote speech, accompanied by suitable press releases. Clear Type was declared to be an important fruit of the $2 Billion per year Microsoft is spending on their new Research facility.
Now, back to reality. Microsoft's emphasis on the youthfulness of its employees is probably the cause of their missing the fact that this technology was developed 22 years ago by Steve Wozniak for the Apple II. If you want to know more about this sub-pixel rendering technique, directly from someone who worked with it back then, Steve Gibson will tell you all about it.
