Government agencies that have been buying Windows NT based on Microsoft's security claims were handed a rude awakening in the summer of 1998 (this news has just worked its way to the surface). Windows NT 4.0 resoundingly failed Federal Information Standard (FIPS) 140-1 certification tests for cryptography.

Microsoft will be forced to do a redesign of the operating system to meet the specification. When they are done, only Internet Explorer 5.0 will be able to work in FIPS mode. IE 4.0, Outlook 98 (and probably other applications) won't work. Reported in NetworkWorld Fusion, 1-11-1999.
