"Independent Test"?

It turns out the controversial Mindcraft Linux vs. NT benchmark tests were done at a Microsoft facility, probably with Microsoft supervision.

Mindcraft claims they they asked for help with Linux through a post to a newsgroup, but received no response. Since all newsgroup posts are recorded by DejaNews, a search was launched and the post has apparently been found. It is from the right time and exactly describes Mindcraft's setup.

Some interesting features of this post are: it came through a proxy server on the Microsoft campus. It was posted using an internal beta release of Internet Explorer 5 from a machine running a beta release of Windows NT 5.0. Was this study actually done by Microsoft and just published by Mindcraft?

For more, have a look here. Further on this story, a Microsoft official has since admitted it was a "very finely tuned NT server up against a poorly configured Linux box".
